Why We Celebrate Veterans Day
Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11th in order to honor all of the men and women who have served or are serving in the United States Armed Forces. This includes those who have served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
Veterans Day originally started as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919—the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution declaring November 11th as a legal holiday to commemorate the end of the war. In 1938, it became an annual tradition. And in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to include veterans from all wars.
How You Can Show Your Appreciation
There are many ways that you can show your appreciation for our veterans on Veterans Day (and really, every day). One way is by flying the American flag. If you don’t have one, you can purchase one at any store that sells flags. Another way is by volunteering at a local VA hospital or veteran’s home. You can also donate to veteran’s charities or send care packages to active-duty troops overseas. But perhaps the best way to show your appreciation is simply by taking the time to say “thank you” to a veteran—whether you know them personally or not.
Today, we honor all of the incredible men and women who have served or are serving our country. We are so grateful for everything that you have done and continue to do for us. Thank you for your courage, your strength, and your dedication—we are truly proud to be Americans!
